It's Now or Never

"A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways." - James 1:8

For high school students across the country, the deadline for taking the AP Exams, especially AP Chemistry, is quickly approaching. At this moment, students either fall in two camps: students who find this subject very difficult to understand and will not take the AP exam or students who feel confident about the subject matter and will take the AP exam.

Let me start with an ancient Buddhist proverb to get things in perspective: "The teacher comes when the student is ready."

Actually, I am here to share lights from both experiences that I am privilege and blessed to had happened in my life . Before I do that, let me tell you my personal story when I was in your shoes preparing to take the AP exams back in high school. The anxiety of what to expect all started in the Fall 2003 when students were enjoying their first day of school after a long break of summer (2 months!). This was my senior year and have a full loaded class schedule with every single class you can imagine is AP course. At the time when I was picking my class schedule with my high school counselor a year earlier, I was very ambitious and motivated. Now during my first day of school, I was guessing if my decision was a smart one to follow through. A had a lucky break that day that calmed my nerves down because AP Chemistry was the last course on my schedule before the school dismissed. All my other AP courses that I was taking did not capture my attention and I was looking forward to my last class of the day. I discovered on that first day that this will be a special class and a special year. This is the very first time in my high school career that I felt a genuine interest from my teacher and want to ride along with the student's journey instead being there because it's a job duty.

I am about to reveal a secret that very few close friends did not know about me. I did not consider myself a "smart" student in my class. For example, we had one student got accepted to MIT and my nemesis went to NC State. You are probably wondered who is my "nemesis" that I am referring to? I do not know about you but our class is very competitive group of students. There was a girl that lived within my same neighborhood and was in the same AP Chemistry class that I am. For starters, her personality was very annoying. She always think she had the right answer and she will let you know without any doubt. From that moment on, I made a secret promise with myself to be a better person and beat her at her own game. As months passed and on the day of to take the exam, I was scared since I woke up late. I was rushing to get out of the door and get to the testing center before it was too late. As you might expected, my nerves was fluctuating as each second vanished. I had to tell myself that I arrived and that you can do it. I believed I had to repeat this phrase in my head about thousand times over and over until I made myself believed it. I knew once I opened the exam, I knew I will passed it. This day was a compilation of long night and moments when I even doubt myself.

I hope when you finished reading my story that you have a sense of inspiration but more importantly that you believed in your ability to accomplished anything. With that being said, like the blog titled "It's Now or Never," just like I made an internal decision to pass this AP Chemistry exam you can have that opportunity happened to you. Let's Ace The Basics!

“Any fool can know. The point is to understand.”  by Albert Einstein

Isn't it ironic, as you get older...the less you understand about life? More importantly, we as humanity spends the majority of our waking hours putting our priority in the back seat. At this time, for most of the world, we are celebrating the holidays and another new year is fast approaching on the horizon. It is a time of reflection and also, for most of us, we can either stay on the same path or undergo a life change from within ourselves. I hope you will set aside a few moments during these last weeks to decide what person you would like to become or transition to become.

Having said this, students from the rest of the world are off during the Christmas holiday which marks the start of the second half of the school year. That is why the blog started with the quote by Albert Einstein because it puts all of us on the same equal playing field. This quote means to me whatever you have done or have failed to do, learn from your ways. Your ways are not wrong, they are tools for you to learn from. Contrary to the way society looks at "mistakes" or "failures,"  these actions that you have decide to take are ways for your brain to grow and learn. Not to be scolded. However, that is not the hardwiring we are given from the moment we breath on this wonderful planet.

How does this have to do anything with me? No matter what stages of life I'm in, either a high school student, college student, or landing my first job, the quickest way to be successful in the 21st century is to learn to adapt to my environment and learn how to unlearn what I was taught growing up. I know this sounds very unorthodox initially but if you inventory all the information you have learned at this point in your life and ask yourself what have you gained. For example, I told myself I would not have a typically life. As such, my learning curve was different compare to my peers. I realized that the measure of success in my life is directly correlated on how fast I can learn a skill. From that moment on I started a lifetime journey of learning. The key is to find something you love to do but regardless on what it is just be real with yourself.

It all comes full circle. That is the reason why I titled the blog with "Let's Ace The Basics!" If you are struggling with your schoolwork or simply you just know there is nothing that could help you, then obviously you haven't visited my blog lately. Whatever you are going through, it does not have to be that way. If you are looking for a mentor or just a personalize academic coach, I am here for you.

For the coming weeks, I will create a series of short YouTube videos that will complement the message in this blog. My goal is very simple which is to convey the information in a way that will put your life on track to success. Ready for College Credits?

Are you in high school taking AP courses? Do you think you will pass the AP exam? If you answer "No" to the second question, I can help you gain the confidence to ace that exam. How do I know that? I know what you are thinking because I had those exact same thoughts when I was a high school student taking that same exam about 10 years ago. Whoa, I am not that old! You have thoughts brewing in your head right now, "You don't know me, I have a horrible science background?," "Do you know that I have a horrible teacher that does not care?," "Do you know that the school that I am enrolled in is not one of the greatest school?" I know more than you think I know. Guess what, if you reading this blog, your parents have tried to get your attention or even your best friend. How did that go? Try me out...read my personal story given below.

Here is how it all started. I thought when I was in middle school, Jackson Middle School, Go Trojans!, I was never good in science. We had more than 5 substitute teachers in a short period of a month. Honestly, at the time I kinda enjoyed it since we do not have that much homework while we have the substitute teacher in our classroom, I knew there is really no school. Subsequently, that event later affected me during my high school years, Ben L. Smith, when I was taking much harder courses like Honor Chemistry. Do you know what is so funny? In my sophomore year when I took the Honor Chemistry class, I had a great teacher, Ms. Hipscher, who actually help me realized that I can do this. I do not know what happened during that moment, but I looked like I have years of solid science background. That is what I hope to be for YOU if you are looking for the right person that genuinely care.

So what did you learn from the story? It is very simple. The secret to anything in life, but especially a high school student is belief that you are smart enough to accomplish anything. In order to reach that state of mind, you need to realize that you need to make sacrifice today to reap the rewards down the road later. I know that for most of us school had just started. I know that it is too early to prepared for the exam at this moment, but why wait for another semester to get prepared. Please stay tuned and read my weekly blog as I will help not only like learning but we can interact with each other. I can provide assistance to anyone taking math and sciences courses. I do not want to make you feel if you are not taking advance courses, you are left out.

I would love to have a conversation with YOU so please leave any comments that you may on this article. In addition, I encourage you to send me any questions or concerns that you may have in your current course loads so I may address it. If you find this article any helpful or has impact you in any fashion, please feel free to support my blog by donating to the cause.

If you are a parent that would like me to become a personal mentor to your kid, please email me your contact information or if you would to schedule a time for an interview to determine personality compatibility, you can do that as well. Good luck and hope to see you next time! Click this link if you would like to know when you are taking your exam 2013 AP Exam Date.

Personal Mentor

"Do not be confined to your parents learning, for you were born of a different time" - Ancient Proverb

Let's me introduce myself. My name is Khai Nguyen. Here is my personal story of how I started my tutoring company, YOKO HELPER. The company would not existed today if while I was in college I didn't always find myself the day before studying the exam late night, stressing out due to a lack of preparation, and drinking caffeinated drinks (i.e. coffee and red bull) just to keep my eyes awake till sunrise comes up. In other words, it feels like a full-time job with no guaranteed pay-off and definitely no pay-check. During those long painful hours studying before the exam, I always find myself having thoughts in mind like "It would be nice if a mentor or anyone can help me passed this exam?" I never put that much second thought into that idea until I find myself again in the same predicatment in another class.

I thought I was the only student experiencing this until I ask my fellow classmates, "Wouldn't it be nice if someone would come up with a solution to fixed this problem." Guess what? I was that student that finds the solution to the age-old question we have as students, "Can anyone help me pass this exam?"

Am I qualified to be your mentor? I will let you be the judge and make your own decision after reading this blog. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I went to Ben L. Smith High School, Go Eagles!, in 2003. As you can tell, I was a serious studious student sometimes too serious. I took several honor and AP courses as a high school student. Fortunately, I have passed several AP courses such as AP Chemistry, and AP Psychology. Summer was real short then I was shipped off to college just down the street to UNC-Chapel Hill.  The only reason why I went there was at the time I applied to colleges, I thought UNC will give me the best chance to go to Pharmacy School. This is not a Cinderella story with a happy ending. It was actually short-lived. I studied for three years and transferred to UNC-Greensboro. The decision was partially influence by then ex-girlfriend. Don't tell me, I know! Luckily, I was able to finish my undergraduate degree in 2009 with B.S. Chemistry with minor in Biochemistry.

Does the degree makes me more intelligent? Not really. What did I learn during those years? Not much. That is when I realized the time I spent and the stress I put myself through, was it really worth it? It is ironic how after you graduated from college, you have all these deep reflective thoughts coming to your mind. This is where my soul searching journey begins. I made my mission at that moment to help as much high school and college students to make their education path as easier than what I experienced.

In summary, I would like to take this opportunity to be your personal mentor for academic 2012-2013 school year. If you like me, that do not ask help for anything, maybe it is a guy thing, or you and school  do not go together? Then if you would like to contact me you can simply reach me on Facebook or on Twitter where I will personally call you back. I hope to hear from you and have a great school year!
